J.P. Walsh is a geological oceanographer. He is joint appointed between the Department of Geological Sciences and the Institute for Coastal Science and Policy at ECU, where he has been a faculty member since 2004. Generally, his research is focused on how materials from land are dispersed and accumulate in the ocean. He uses sediment characteristics, oceanographic measurements, and geophysical methods to understand the processes shaping the seafloor. This work is important in examining the fate of pollutants, evaluating ecosystem dynamics, extracting resources and defining coastal hazards. Walsh is actively involved in research projects in New Zealand, Puerto Rico, the Gulf of Mexico, and North Carolina. He joined the faculty of UNC-CSI in January of 2012.
