The Department of Coastal Studies in East Carolina University’s new Integrated Coastal Programs unit plans to hire a cohort of four scholars into tenure-track positions at its Outer Banks campus. These positions are part of a major ECU investment in research and teaching programs focused on ocean margins. We seek creative and rigorous scholars with an interest in working across disciplinary boundaries to shed light on complex problems resulting from the interaction of people and the natural environment. Although these are research-focused positions, we seek innovative teachers to participate in the department’s interdisciplinary PhD program and develop place-based classes and short courses at ECU’s Outer Banks campus.
Applicants should be committed to aggressively pursuing collaborative research endeavors that incorporate both natural and social sciences (as an example, please see https://www.nsf.gov/od/oia/convergence/index.jsp ). We are explicitly looking for researchers who focus on multiple dimensions of complex societal problems related to the natural environment, and who are open to new ways of broadening and deepening their approaches to research and teaching. The successful candidates will be expected to build a strong externally funded research program; provide professional service; teach and develop courses at the undergraduate and graduate level; and develop research collaborations and synergistic activities with other faculty members of DCS, ECU, and partner institutions. We seek candidates working to answer significant ecological questions in coastal environments. Candidates working in the coastal margin (both water column and benthos), tidal creeks, wetlands, and other shallow water habitats, and in estuaries and bays are especially encouraged to apply. Research focused on ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, or restoration ecology is encouraged, although we will consider all candidates with strong research records in any area of applied coastal ecology. Doctorate in ecology, biology, or allied field required.
We seek an environmental/ecological engineer to work closely with natural and social scientists in the Department of Coastal Studies. Areas of research focus could include environmental fluid mechanics, sustainable engineering, green coastal infrastructure or low impact development, geomechanics within the context of natural hazards & coastal environments, water resources, water and wastewater treatment, coastal hydrology, and water quality modeling, pollution mitigation and management. The successful candidate will be encouraged to work with colleagues in the North Carolina Renewable Ocean Energy Program to help design sustainable renewable energy solutions. Doctoral degree in engineering or closely allied field required.
Integrative Modeler Focused on Coastal Natural/Human Systems
We seek a candidate with demonstrated ability and experience in integrating disciplinary models and approaches in a framework that facilitates research into complex natural resource and environmental issues. Strong background in at least one discipline is prioritized, as is the ability to communicate and work with colleagues across disciplines in the social, physical, and natural sciences. The successful candidate will work with a cohort of natural, physical, and social scientists to address critical coastal issues in creative ways. Core disciplinary expertise could be in Anthropology, Geography, Economics, and other social sciences; or Physical Oceanography, Ecology, Geology, or other natural and physical sciences. Experience with social science data and modeling is preferred.
Coastal Processes Scientist
Candidates should have a strong background in quantitative investigations of coastal dynamics. Potential areas of primary interest include: coastal circulation or physical oceanography, hydrodynamics, morphodynamics, sediment transport, sedimentary processes in coastal environments, remote sensing, geospatial analytics, and hydrogeology. The successful candidate will likely incorporate the use of satellite-based data, in situ observing systems and/or autonomous vehicles into investigations of geologic/oceanographic and related natural systems and their interactions with anthropogenic systems (including built systems). Applicants using multiple approaches including laboratory and field-oriented observations and modeling are particularly encouraged to apply.
