The students of the UNC Institute for the Environment’s Outer Banks Field Site (OBXFS) will present their Capstone research findings at 2 pm on December 14, 2017 in room 262 at the UNC Coastal Studies Institute located at 850 Hwy 345 in Wanchese, NC. This presentation will highlight the natural and social science research undertaken by the students on their semester-long project on shoreline protection and living shorelines.
The students will report on their research efforts to understand estuarine shoreline protection strategies and decision-making with a particular focus on living shorelines. Living shorelines encompass a range of techniques for utilizing “soft” or “green” elements, such as natural materials like vegetation alongside harder structures like oyster reefs or rock sills, to stabilize shorelines and reduce erosion without the use of structures like bulkheads or seawalls. The students will share the findings of qualitative interview-based research to document the perceptions, values, and key factors underlying the decisions coastal property owners must make to protect their properties and shorelines. They will also present the results of a field and laboratory study to measure the capacity of living shorelines across the region to assimilate and store atmospheric carbon dioxide, a key contributor to climate change.
The OBXFS is a UNC-Chapel Hill fall semester program for undergraduate students from across the UNC system and beyond, hosted by the UNC Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese. Students at the site take classes in coastal resource economics, coastal management, and coastal ecology, take part in a group research project (the Capstone), and do an internship project with community partners or UNC CSI faculty. The coursework is place-based and the student experience is greatly enhanced by interactions with the community, facilitated by our Community Advisory Board and other individuals and groups in Northeastern North Carolina.
The program will also be streamed live at the following address: https://www.coastalstudiesinstitute.org/outreach/live-streaming/
