Anja Sjostrom was a bright up-and-coming scholar that was taken too soon from the ECU and CSI family.  Her work embodied CSI’s Mission.  In her own words, she wanted “… to work with partners across multiple research institutions, agencies, and communities on complex coastal issues.”  Anja was interested in how climate change impacts highly migratory fish species and the coastal livelihoods and ecosystems that depend on them.  Anja believed that the Integrated Coastal Sciences PhD program could help her make a difference in coastal communities and was enrolled as a student in the program.  Anja chose the program because of its “focus on creating stronger lexicons and processes of successful collaborations across inter and transdisciplinary spaces.”  We have created the following scholarship to honor and celebrate the life of Anja Sjostrom.

The Anja Sjostrom Memorial Scholarship in Coastal Science
This scholarship will provide support for students enrolled in the Integrated Coastal Sciences PhD, Undergraduate Semester at the Coast Program, or other interdisciplinary academic programs hosted by ECU Integrated Coastal Programs.

Led by East Carolina University (ECU), The Coastal Studies Institute is a multi-institutional research and educational partnership of the UNC System including North Carolina State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington, and Elizabeth City State University.
