Soundside Science Scouts

A mini-camp experience for young minds.

This new, single-day camp is for those not quite old enough- children ages 7 to 9– to attend one of CSI’s annual summer camps. The inaugural Soundside Science Scouts program was held in Spring 2024, and blended CSI’s four existing camp themes into one exciting day. Participants viewed coastal ecology, maritime heritage, and renewable energy through the lens of positive environmental stewardship by exploring ideas of habitat, ecosystem, and the beauty of the world around them. A keepsake craft was also incorporated into the day.

Because of the great success with the initial program, the Coastal Studies Institute plans to host these mini-camps throughout the year. While programming for future Soundside Science Scouts is in the works, CSI has already set dates for the 2024-2025 school year. They are as follows:

  • Monday, November 11
  • Monday, Feb 10
  • Friday, March 14
  • Friday, April 25

Each of these programs will be held from 9 AM- 3:30 PM at the Coastal Studies Institute, and we can accept up to 16 individuals. More details about themes and registration coming soon! In the meantime, questions about the programs should be directed to Parker Murphy- kellama19@ecu.edu; 252-475-5452.

Led by East Carolina University (ECU), The Coastal Studies Institute is a multi-institutional research and educational partnership of the UNC System including North Carolina State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington, and Elizabeth City State University.
